How do you control it?¶
Find the MIDI ports, then start the bridge with this driver:
osc-bridge detect # prints the ready-to-run line for what is plugged in
osc-bridge run --device devices/m-vave/fm-1.vendor.fw-fm1gm-1.0.2.json --out-port <N> --in-port <M>
Then send OSC to 127.0.0.1:7777, for example:
From Claude or any MCP client, the osc-bridge mcp server exposes this driver as fm1_fm1gm: ask “what can the M-VAVE FM-1 do?” and it reads this map with list_routes. See the MCP guide.

Limitations¶
FM1-GM 1.0.2 by jartificer (GPL-3.0), a gm-module+sequencer firmware for the FM-1. Channels: 16-channel GM engine (GM_NCH 16), ch10 = drums. 16 tracks, track n on channel n by default (seq.c:72), any channel per track. Setup 'MIDI in': TRACK (default) = every incoming channel plays the selected track (notes at the track's velocity, CC/bend/pressure re-channelled to the track's channel, PC dropped); MULTI = each channel as sent, as a GM module, and notes on the selected track's channel record (ui.c:448-481, seq.c:820-829). Note on ch10 = GM drum hit (kit notes 35-81, note-off ignored, rings out); other channels melodic, vel 0 = off (gm.c:446-464). Polyphony 16 melodic (Setup 8-24) + 8 drum. TRS jack is MIDI IN only (channel messages and F8/FA/FB/FC; SysEx ignored), merged with USB into one queue (midi_uart.c:3-7). Pitch bend: 14-bit, default +/-2 semitones, RPN 0 sets 0-24 (gm.c:59, 468-471, 498-499, 556). Aftertouch: Channel and poly pressure ignored by the engine (gm.c:500 default). Clock: In: FA starts and FC stops the sequencer; F8 ignored, no external tempo sync, no SPP (ui.c:452-459; README.md:143). Out: optional 'clock out' (default Off): F8 24 PPQN, FA, FC (seq.c:406-471, 802-803). MIDI out: USB, 'MIDI out' default Off: everything sent to the engine (sequencer notes and track program/volume/pan/reverb on each track's channel, live and MIDI-in messages) is echoed (seq.c:273-278, settings.c:13-14). NRPN: none; RPN 0 (bend range) only, data entry MSB, CC38 ignored. SysEx `F0 7D 46 47`: song link for web/editor.html: 01 HELLO (proto, song format, slots, version), 02 LIST, 03 READ, 04 WRITE, 05 DATA, 06 DELETE; replies cmd|40 + status. No GM System On parsing. SysEx `F0 (pack7: 00 59 cmd len24 body chk) F7`: M-VAVE update protocol: identify (cmd 0x11, the F0 00 32 45 00 00 00 40 7F F7 query) answers the 27-byte package identity (FELUCCA_ID); read requests 0x30 during an install. SysEx `F0 22 24 35 7F F7`: start an update session (M-UPGRADE pull). SysEx `F0 22 24 35 7D F7`: soft key: reboot into UBOOT / mask-ROM loader (never send). SysEx `F0 7D 46 4C`: absent: no Felucca editor protocol (no editor.c), so no INFO reply. SysEx `F0 43`: absent: no raw DX7 voice/bank parser. SysEx `F0 7E 7F 06 01`: absent: no Universal Identity reply. Identity: Vendor identify: 'FM-1_600' (main.c default) / release build 'FM-1_6010002 for 1.0.2' (tools/build.py --release). No editor INFO, no Universal Identity. USB product 'FM1-GM'. Update loader shows as 'ota-FM-1_015'. Manufacturer 'jartificer'. Link HELLO reports the version.
Frequently asked questions¶
How many parameters of the M-VAVE FM-1 can be controlled over MIDI?
SynthHub's map of the M-VAVE FM-1 lists 12 MIDI CC parameters, each with its number, range and a readable name; the full chart is on this page.
Can an AI agent like Claude control the M-VAVE FM-1?
Yes: SynthHub's hosted MCP server knows the M-VAVE FM-1's MIDI map, and its browser relay lets the agent send it parameter changes or load a sound, each sound change confirmed by you.
