How do you control it?¶
Find the MIDI ports, then start the bridge with this driver:
osc-bridge detect # prints the ready-to-run line for what is plugged in
osc-bridge run --device devices/m-vave/fm-1.vendor.fw-386dx-1.0.2.json --out-port <N> --in-port <M>
From Claude or any MCP client, the osc-bridge mcp server exposes this driver as fm1_386dx: ask “what can the M-VAVE FM-1 do?” and it reads this map with list_routes. See the MCP guide.
Performance MIDI¶
Notes, pitch bend and any CC are also available: /fm1_386dx/note/on <note> <velocity>, /fm1_386dx/cc/<number> <value>, /fm1_386dx/pitchbend <0-16383>, /fm1_386dx/program_change <n>.
Limitations¶
386DX 1.0.2 by seajaysec (GPL-3.0), a instrument firmware for the FM-1. No CC, program change, bend, aftertouch or clock handling: incoming MIDI only plays notes (ui.c ui_midi); Clock bytes are queued by USB/TRS drivers but the app ignores them; Note handling: VERIFIED-SOURCE firmware/src/app/ui.c:2076-2098. Channels: Fixed: ch1-3 -> tracks 1-3 (Keys, Bass, Drums by enum: ch0->Keys,ch1->Bass,ch2->Drums), ch10 -> Drums (GM notes 36,38,41,45,48,37,39,56,49,46,42 -> 11 lanes), any other channel -> Keys. Not configurable. USB and TRS merged. Pitch bend: ignored. Aftertouch: ignored. Clock: none used: internal tempo only (F8/FA/FB/FC parsed by drivers, dropped by ui_midi). MIDI out: USB only: companion-protocol SysEx replies; no notes, CC or clock. NRPN: none. SysEx `F0 7D 4F 4D`: companion protocol v8: 2 panel buttons/keys, 3 encoder, 32 status ('386DX'), 40-43 song upload/read, 44/45 syllable count, 47 stop, 49 slot list, 50 slot read, 51 delete, 52 restart, 53 screen. SysEx `F0 00 59 (pack7)`: M-UPGRADE vendor update protocol (F0 pack7(00 59 cmd .) F7; cmd 0x11 handshake answers package identity; F0 22 24 35 7F F7 upgrade; F0 22 24 35 7D F7 UBOOT). SysEx `F0 43`: no raw DX7 F0 43 parser. Identity: vendor identify FM-1_3860017 (main.c:41); companion status reply '386DX' protocol 8; USB manufacturer '386DX', product '386DX FM-1'; no editor INFO, no Universal Identity. It reads no CC.
Frequently asked questions¶
Can an AI agent like Claude control the M-VAVE FM-1?
Yes: SynthHub's hosted MCP server knows the M-VAVE FM-1's MIDI map, and its browser relay lets the agent send it parameter changes or load a sound, each sound change confirmed by you.
