Use it

Find the MIDI ports, then start the bridge with this driver:

osc-bridge detect # prints the ready-to-run line for what is plugged in
osc-bridge run --device devices/yamaha/dx7.vendor.fw-supermax-plus-2.10.json --out-port <N> --in-port <M>

Then send OSC to 127.0.0.1:7777, for example:

osc-bridge osc-send /dx7/local_control 63

From Claude or any MCP client, the osc-bridge mcp server exposes this driver as dx7: ask “what can the Yamaha DX7 do?” and it reads this map with list_routes. See the MCP guide.

MIDI controls

3 controls, each with its number, its range and the name to send

SuperMAX+

Control CC Range Name to send
Local control 122 0–127 /dx7/local_control
Omni off 124 0–127 /dx7/omni_off
Omni on 125 0–127 /dx7/omni_on

JSON

The same MIDI as dx7.knobkraft.fw-unknown, which this firmware shares.

Limitations

SuperMAX+ (MAXsystems firmware v2.10, made by Music Technologies Group) replaces the DX7 system ROM. Shares the DX7 voice SysEx of the librarian driver and adds: Program Change 1-128 reaching banks 1-4 (bank 2 = 33-64 or the cartridge), sent when a patch is chosen on the panel and selecting the bank on receipt (use /program_change; upper banks are panel only); CC#122 Local Control, CC#124 Omni Off, CC#125 Omni On (mapped; 'not fully tested' by the author); MIDI Clock (F8) and Start (FA) drive the arpeggiator tempo, divided or multiplied on the unit; they are not mapped here, because the shared driver's SysEx framing wraps every command, so use a clock source. Per patch: MIDI out channel and key zones, set on the unit. A bank dump is standard only if the bank uses no SuperMAX feature. Switch S1 adds +3 to the transmitted velocity. Sold as hardware by its maker; nothing is hosted here. Untested on hardware.

Firmwares

The Yamaha DX7 runs 7 firmwares SynthHub maps, each with its own MIDI or another's it shares. All the devices with several: firmwares.

Frequently asked questions

How many parameters of the Yamaha DX7 can be controlled over MIDI?

SynthHub's map of the Yamaha DX7 lists 3 MIDI CC parameters, each with its number, range and a readable name; the full chart is on this page.

Can an AI agent like Claude control the Yamaha DX7?

Yes: SynthHub's hosted MCP server knows the Yamaha DX7's MIDI map, and its browser relay lets the agent send it parameter changes or load a sound, each sound change confirmed by you.
