Use it

Find the MIDI ports, then start the bridge with this driver:

osc-bridge detect # prints the ready-to-run line for what is plugged in
osc-bridge run --device devices/akai/mpc2000.vendor.fw-1.7.json --out-port <N> --in-port <M>

Then send OSC to 127.0.0.1:7777, for example:

osc-bridge osc-send /mpc2000/all_notes_off 0

From Claude or any MCP client, the osc-bridge mcp server exposes this driver as mpc2000: ask “what can the Akai MPC2000 do?” and it reads this map with list_routes. See the MCP guide.

Limitations

Source: Akai MPC2000 Version 1.5 addendum (Japanese, 1997): MIDI implementation charts (sound generator and sequencer sections, version 1.0), MIDI Footswitch Assignment, MIDI sample dump and Receive MMC; with the Version 1.3 addendum (mix change SysEx) and Version 1.7 addendum (multi-sample dump, sync out on A and B), same Akai Japan document folder (m2kv13j.pdf, m2kv17j.pdf). The MIDI charts list the sampler (sound generator) section: notes 35-98 play the program's pads on its MIDI channel, Program Change 0-127 selects the program, channel pressure drives Note Repeat; the sequencer records and plays any channel message, which the performance routes cover. System Exclusive: sent and received by both sections; the MIDI Sample Dump Standard (V1.5 addendum, exclusive channel set on the unit) is not mapped. The MPC2000 Operator's Manual itself was not found; these addenda give the charts but no default pad-to-note table, so pads are not listed as triggers: notes 35-98 play whatever the program assigns. The sound generator's default channel is 16 per the chart. MIDI Footswitch Assignment maps any user-chosen CC number (value 64 or more) to PLAY START, PLAY, STOP, REC+PLAY, OVERDUB+PLAY, punch, TAP, PAD BANK, pads 01-16 and F1-F6; the numbers are set on the unit, so none is fixed here. Receive MMC can be switched on (SYNC page) but the received commands are not listed. Mixer changes are recorded in sequences as F0 47 00 44 45 type pad value F7 (type 01 stereo level, 02 stereo pan, 03 FX send, 04 individual level; pad A01-D16 = 00-3F; value 00-64H); the addendum does not say they are received from MIDI IN, so they are not mapped. Untested on hardware.

Frequently asked questions

How many parameters of the Akai MPC2000 can be controlled over MIDI?

SynthHub's map of the Akai MPC2000 lists 2 MIDI CC parameters, each with its number, range and a readable name; the full chart is on this page.

Can an AI agent like Claude control the Akai MPC2000?

Yes: SynthHub's hosted MCP server knows the Akai MPC2000's MIDI map, and its browser relay lets the agent send it parameter changes or load a sound, each sound change confirmed by you.
